Cozy games that don't nag you to come back
A cozy game is supposed to lower your heart rate, so it's strange how many of them are built to spike it. Energy bars, timed crops that wilt, notifications guilt-tripping you back in — that's not relaxation, that's a part-time job.
The sims I actually keep installed, like Rootbound Farmstead, remove all of that. You play, you stop, and nothing punishes you for leaving for a week. The world just waits patiently.
It turns out pacing without timers is harder to design than it looks. You have to make the next step tempting through the content itself, not through artificial scarcity. When a studio pulls it off, the game feels generous rather than grabby.
My simple test: does the game send me push notifications begging for attention? If yes, I usually turn them off within a day, and if the game falls apart without them, it wasn't really cozy to begin with.
Look for titles that trust you to come back on your own. Those are the ones that stay fun for months.
