Small RPGs that punch above their size
There's a quiet renaissance of small RPGs on mobile, made by teams of two or three, and most people never hear about them. They skip the bloat of huge franchises and focus on one tight idea done well.
What I look for is readable combat. On a small screen, a battle has to communicate everything at a glance — whose turn it is, what the threats are, what my options cost. Games like Ember of the Last Caravan nail this by keeping menus flat and icons large.
Story matters more in a short RPG, oddly. With less filler, every scene has to earn its place. The best ones use a sparse style and let your imagination do the rest, which also keeps download sizes sane.
Save design is the quiet hero. A mobile RPG that can't resume instantly from a locked screen is fighting the platform. The good ones treat a two-minute session as valid play, not a waste.
If you've written off phone RPGs as shallow, dig past the top of the charts. The gems are a few rows down.
