Strategy games that fit a coffee break

Strategy games that fit a coffee break

Strategy has a reputation for eating hours, which doesn't fit how most of us use phones. But a good number of small strategy games have figured out how to give you a meaningful decision in five minutes.

The trick is short, self-contained rounds. Tideline Command does this well — each map is a tight scenario you can win or lose in one sitting, with a clean save if life interrupts. You get the satisfaction of a plan coming together without an open-ended time sink.

Clarity on a small screen is everything here. If I can't read the board at a glance, the strategy becomes a guessing game. The best ones use colour and bold icons rather than tiny numbers.

I also love when these games teach through play rather than walls of text. You make a mistake, see the consequence, and adjust. That loop is more fun and sticks far better than any tutorial.

Keep one of these installed for the next time you're stuck in a queue. Beats doomscrolling.
